Office of Senator Dones: STEM Opportunities Intern
Description

The STEM Opportunities Department will focus on providing tangible resources and professional development opportunities for low-income, first-generation, and marginalized students pursuing degrees related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The department will also work with the Administrative Advocacy Department on academic issues including entrance requirements for Data Science and Computer Science. Finally, the department will work directly with the Engineering Student Council and STEM-oriented RSO’s to change recruiting practices that keep marginalized students out of these organizations.

 

Qualifications

Interest in improving marginalized students’ experiences in STEM fields, excellent writing skills, willingness to collaborate and work within a team, etc.

 

Responsibilities

  • Attend and take notes during weekly SO Department meetings
  • Work alongside SO Associates to organize events that boost diverse retention efforts in STEM-oriented extracurricular programs
  • Consistently communicate with STEM students and community organizations to best address the ever-changing needs of Cal students
  • Additional responsibilities at the discretion of a department executive

 

Commitment

  • < 4  hours/week
  • Required to attend all weekly department breakout sessions
