Fall 2020 ASUC Mental Health Commission

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in joining the Mental Health Commission. The Mental Health Commission is looking for passionate individuals and advocates to join the MHC in either our internal or ASUC departments.  We serve as the representative undergraduate voice on mental health as defined by ASUCBL 3008, acting as the central liaison between mental health stakeholders, addressing the intersectionalities of mental health. The purposes of the commission includes but is not limited to: representing and advocating for the mental health concerns of the undergraduate Cal population through community outreach.; provide and facilitate spaces where representatives of mental health stakeholders can come together and collaborate on how and why mental health awareness and resources should be accessible and integral to student life. This Commission thereby acts within the ASUC as an independent, nonpartisan coalition seeking to better the climate around mental health wellness and awareness on campus.

We simply expect a shared passion and drive for mental health advocacy and improving the campus climate around mental health!

 

Position descriptions:

External Associate -  (no prior experience necessary) 

  • The External Associate will help the External Director’s execution of projects that  aim to respond to campus input and facilitate meetings with administrators and faculty. External works with CAPS, UHS and Faculty to have campus conversations about mental health and improve mental health resources.
  • Qualifications: an interest in promoting mental health campus-wide and working with administration.
  • Anticipated Workload: 2.5 hours of meetings every two weeks, 1-2 hours of remote project work per week

Communications Associate - (no prior experience necessary)

  • The Communications Associate will help the Communications Director’s execution of projects that aim to unite ASUC mental health stakeholders via communication. The Communications department works with all external facing departments and organizations to strengthen partnerships around mental health and ensure the commission is present online for feedback, input, and promoting resources via social media. 
  • 2020 - 2021 Projects: Publishing our first, centralized website with mental health resources, Student Assessment on Mental Health (Research), Mental Health Week, maintaining a journal/blog, and more! 
  • Qualifications: an interest in promoting mental health to students online and some experience with writing (or graphic design) is preferred.
  • Anticipated Workload: 2.5 hours of meetings every two weeks, 1 hour of remote project work per week

ASUC Associate - (no prior experience necessary)

  • The ASUC Associate will help the ASUC Director’s execution of projects that aim to unite ASUC mental health stakeholders. ASUC department works with other ASUC offices to have community conversations about mental health and ensure the commission is pursuant to bylaws. 
  • Qualifications: an interest in promoting mental health to students and within the ASUC.
  • Anticipated Workload: 2.5 hours of meetings every two weeks, 1 hour of remote project work per week

ASUCBL 3308§1.2: “The Mental Health Commission is charged with holding the university accountable for transforming university mental health and wellness policies and resources; improving, expanding, and publicizing mental health services and resources; improving educational awareness and consciousness regarding mental health and the stigma around mental health among students; and otherwise promoting the participation and general welfare of the student body and in the community to ensure mental health wellness and to create a more inclusive campus climate.”
