The Lower Sproul Redevelopment program is officially getting under way, and as a result there will be significant changes to the LowerSproul Plaza this Spring. The Lower Sproul project is a multi-million dollar student-led program to reinvigorate Lower Sproul by rebuildling Eshleman Hall, significantly expanding and remodeling the MLK Jr. Student Union, and improving Cesar Chavez and Anthony Hall. It began with the B.E.A.R.S. Initiative Referendum in the Spring of 2009, and will continue until the Fall of 2015. This is an incredibly exciting project, and it will provide fantastic new spaces and opportunities for thousands of students at Berkeley.
Here are the changes that have already taken place or will begin this Spring semester:
Relocated Career Center
The Career Center was relocated this fall to 2440 Bancroft Way (Telegraph and Dana)
MLK Jr Student Union and Bookstore
The bookstore will remain open through mid-February 2013, but all other rooms in the MLK Jr Student Union including Pauley Ballroom, the Tilden Room, and all the restaurants are now closed. Alumnae Hall, located in the Anna Head complex between Crossroads Dining and Martinez Commons, will be opening in the Spring as an alternative event space for the duration of the project.
Anthony Hall Remodeling
Anthony Hall is undergoing a significant remodeling and retrofit during winter break and will be reopening in late January with final landscaping scheduled to be completed in April.
Eshleman Hall Demolition
Eshleman Hall is now closed and a total cleaning out of the building is continuing through January. Removal of hazardous material will begin in February and complete demolition of the building is scheduled to be completed in the summer. Fencing will surround the building throughout this process.
Cesar Chavez Interior Improvements
Interior improvements to the Cesar Chavez Student Center began during the winter break, including new flooring & paint in the classrooms and restroom upgrades. All these changes are scheduled to be completed by March.
Changing Bus Stops on Bancroft at Eshleman Hall
The AC Transit stops for the F, 49, 51B, 52 and UC Berkeley shuttles that stop on Bancroft at Eshleman Hall have been moved one block up the street to the former loading zone in front of Sproul Hall.
The stops for the AC Transit Lines 1 and 1R on Bancroft Way at Eshleman have been removed. The lines will still to stop on Telegraph at Durant as well as on Bancroft at Dana.
Sidewalk Closed on Bancroft from Telegraph to Dana
The sidewalk on the north side of Bancroft will be closed starting in mid-January and the crosswalk on Bancroft Way at Sather Lane have been removed. Pedestrians will be able to cross Bancroft Way only at Telegraph Ave or Dana Street.
